CRA My Account for Individuals

To set up your CRA My Account (Canada Revenue Agency), follow these detailed steps. This account allows you to manage your personal tax information, apply for benefits, and communicate securely with the CRA.

Before You Begin: What You Need

Make sure you have the following ready:

  1. Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  2. Date of Birth
  3. Postal Code (as per your tax records)
  4. Line 15000 (or 150) from your most recent tax return (total income)
  5. Email Address (for verification and notifications)

🧭 Step-by-Step Registration Guide

Step 1: Visit the CRA Registration Page

Go to the official CRA registration site:

Step 2: Choose a Sign-In Method

You can register using one of three methods:

  • CRA User ID and Password: Create a unique login directly with CRA.
  • Sign-In Partner: Use your online banking credentials (e.g., RBC, TD, Scotiabank).
  • Provincial Partner: Available for residents of Alberta and British Columbia.

Step 3: Enter Your Personal Information

Provide your SIN, date of birth, postal code, and the amount from your tax return (Line 15000). This helps CRA verify your identity.

Step 4: Create Security Credentials

If using the CRA login method:

  • Choose a User ID and Password
  • Set up security questions for account recovery

Step 5: Email Verification

You’ll receive a confirmation email. Click the link to verify your email address.

Step 6: Wait for a Security Code (if applicable)

CRA may mail you a security code to your registered address. Once received, log in and enter the code to fully activate your account.

Once you have access below are the steps to Authorize an Accounting Firm

 

Step 1: Log in to CRA My Account

Go to CRA My Account for Individuals and sign in using:

  • CRA login credentials, or
  • Sign-In Partner (e.g., your bank login)

Step 2: Go to Your Profile

  • Click on the “Profile” tab on the left side of the page

Step 3: Add a Representative

  • Scroll to “Authorized Representatives”
  • Click “Add” and then “Start”

Step 4: Enter the Firm’s Business Number

  • Type in the BN of the accounting firm
  • Click “Search”
  • Confirm the firm’s name when it appears

Step 5: Set Authorization Details

  • Authorization Level: Choose Level 2 for full access (view and update)
  • Online Access: Select “Yes”
  • Expiry Date: Leave blank for no expiry (or set a date if preferred)

Step 6: Review and Submit

  • Review all entered information
  • Confirm and submit the authorization

Once submitted, the firm will have access to your CRA account through the Represent a Client portal.
