How to Sign Up for Direct Deposit (Individual Taxpayer)

1. Through CRA My Account (Fastest)
If you already have CRA My Account, this is the quickest way.
Steps:
- Log in to CRA My Account
- Go to “Profile”
- Select “Direct Deposit”
- Enter your:
- Institution number
- Transit number
- Bank account number
- Save/confirm
Direct deposit usually becomes active within 1–2 business days.
2. Through Your Bank (Most common)
Most major Canadian banks let you sign up directly in online banking:
Look for:
- “Set up CRA direct deposit”
- “Government payments”
- “Tax payments & deposits”
Once submitted, your bank sends the info to CRA automatically.
Supported institutions include RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC, ATB, Tangerine, Simplii and others.
3. By Paper Form (Slowest)
You can also fill out Form T1-DD(1):

You then mail it to your CRA tax centre based on your province.
(this method is now rarely used.)
✔️ What You Need
Regardless of method, you’ll need:
- Bank Name
- Transit Number (5 digits)
- Institution Number (3 digits)
- Account Number (7–12 digits)
You can find these on a cheque, your banking app, or your bank’s website.
